Ebook About ‘I come from Des Moines. Somebody had to’And, as soon as Bill Bryson was old enough, he left. Des Moines couldn’t hold him, but it did lure him back. After ten years in England, he returned to the land of his youth, and drove almost 14,000 miles in search of a mythical small town called Amalgam, the kind of trim and sunny place where the films of his youth were set. Instead, his search led him to Anywhere, USA; a lookalike strip of gas stations, motels and hamburger outlets populated by lookalike people with a penchant for synthetic fibres. He discovered a continent that was doubly lost; lost to itself because blighted by greed, pollution, mobile homes and television; lost to him because he had become a stranger in his own land.Bryson’s acclaimed first success, The Lost Continent is a classic of travel literature – hilariously, stomach-achingly, funny, yet tinged with heartache – and the book that first staked Bill Bryson’s claim as the most beloved writer of his generation.Book The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America (Bryson Book 12) Review :
I just want to point out two things. First, this was written in 1988. Second, the United States is not as dark and negative as one would be lead to believe.I would honestly say that had I read this book first, I would never want to read another Bryson book. I’m sorry but it seemed that Bryson found something negative to say about the people or the land, about 75% of the time. The country is made of a diversity of people with varying degrees of education and ambition, and what is good for one may not be for another.I loved his travel books where he presented the situation as he found it and not as he didn’t understand it. Maybe I have grown up since I read “A Walk in the Woods” by Bill Bryson. At the time, I thought it was funny, well written and a relaxing read. I recently ordered “Neither Here Nor There” and “The Lost Continent” and hoped for some levity in this time of COVID. I was disappointed with both. “The Lost Continent” was written in 1987, so I am hoping that Bill Bryson has maybe grown up a little since then too. His descriptions of women are just cringeworthy. Bryson is fixated on their looks, bottoms, breasts and thinness (or lack thereof). I understand—-it’s from 1987—but still, his comments are misogynistic and usually negative. In fact, almost everything he describes is negative. Yes, yes, Bill—we know that all of America is chock full of ugly, endless strips of gas stations and fast food joints. There are moments when Bryson finds the nugget of beauty or goodness in what he sees, but most of the book is about all the zits, warts and farts of American society. I kept reading hoping that things would improve, but alas—it was just a painful slog through 350 pages of complaining. Not funny, not relaxing and not worth the $ I paid for it.
